Penny Red on Black Plates ( SG. 7 ).

The Penny Red was the was the successor to the Penny Black, issued in 1841. The Penny Red was the main Great Britain Postage stamp right up until 1879 with only some minor changes. Initailly printed on the same plates as the Penny Black the colour change was introduced due to the difficultly in reading black cancels on the Penny Black.
